World Rhino Day

I don’t know how many of you are aware of this but today is World Rhino Day.

Here in South Africa it really touches a nerve because we have been struggling with an evil in the form or rhino poachers.  They kill the rhinos, cut off their horns, and sell it because they believe that the horns have medicinal qualities.  RHINO HORNS DO NOT HAVE MEDICINAL QUALITIES!

As it stand, we have one rhino dying a day. That’s crazy ridiculous!

Rhino Poaching Stats(follow the link to read more):
2008: 83
2009: 122
2010: 333
2011: 279

For more stats, visit STOP RHINO POACHING NOW!  I do have to warn you, there are some very graphic images, so if you're sensitive to these things, don't go.

Jacaranda 94.2 raised more than R1 000 000 last year in an effort to help the war against poachers.  The work they did, and still do, is to be admired and I'm proud to listen to a radio station who supports such a worthy cause.  Here are the Top 10 things you didn't know about rhino poaching.  You can read more here: Rhino Files

  1. Aah, that baby rhino is sooo cute. Rhino poaching is tragic and cruel and the more awareness of this problem, the better.

  2. People should be aware. We had a terrible incident last week where poachers killed a mother rhino and took her horn. Her baby managed to get away somehow but got stuck in a tree or bush. The baby rhino was found alive but a couple of days later it died as well. Such a sad situation. Sometimes I can't believe how cruel people can be.

  3. Oh my word, that first picture with the baby rhino is the cutest thing I've ever seen! :D Poaching any animal is awful, and it's great that you're spreading awareness.
