I Challenge You

This challenge will stay issued until I post my next blog entry. Go do it!

Update 26/01/2012:  I've linked the people who participated at the bottom of this post. Go check out their song choices.

Yeah, I knew that would get your attention. I hope.

I want to challenge you to have a bit of fun with your main character.  On the 19th, Lisa Desrochers posted on her blog a song that represented her new wip's protag. It's a kickass song and the type of music I love and it gave me an idea.

I love how we as writers, most of us anyway, sometimes just hear a song and instantly know that this is something that describes a part of our main character's personality so well.  It's a song that our MC relates to and when you listen to it all you want to do is go back to working on that novel, reread it, or continue plotting it.

This happens a lot with me, especially when I'm at work.  I've got dozens of notes on my desk and in my bag with song titles and the novels they fit with.  One night I was busy with my current WIP and my iTunes threw out a song that made me listen for a few seconds, stop, and replay it again. And again. And again. While I listened to this song, I grinned like a stupid idiot, because the song was such a funny one and did a good job at explaining what my MC, Cadence, felt towards her enemies, though not the antagonist.  This song only reflects one part/aspect of her character. The slightly off kilter, weird, I-wonder-about-you-sometimes part.

My challenge to you.  Blog about a song that reflects one of your main character's characteristics.  I want to get to know your MC and what better way than to have some fun with it, right?  Just an fyi, this MC has been the most challenging one I've written to date.  She's a fighter on all levels.  And weird, but good weird. I hope.

Here's my entry:  The Crash Test Dummies - My Enemies

I sit and concentrate, and try hard not to hate my enemies
I try to picture them dressed up as furry little bunnies
But when I look into their glass eyes
I can see they’re cold and hard and pick

Hopping ‘round, hopping on their two legs
Cute little legs, hopping around and…

I think of dictators who were known to have been especial brutes
And I try to picture them gathered together in their bathing suits
But when I look down at their bodies
I can see they’re warm and soft and pink

Standing around, standing on their two legs
Two little legs, standing around and

I try to meditate, control my hate just like I know I should
But I can’t help myself, and I keep it up because it feels so good
But when I look down at my belly
I can see it’s pink and soft and weak

Kneeling down, kneeling on my two legs
Two skinny legs, I’m kneeling down and…

***

Now that I look at the words properly. WOW. Where did those last lines come from? They kind of fit perfectly with what this whole song represents.  Such a silly song to carry so much meaning. See? Now I'm all fired up to get back to my writing. This WIP needs about 6k more but I'm suspecting it might go a bit over that. And it's only the first draft.  I add lots of words in the second draft.

You can mention as many main characters and songs as you like.  I posted one because this one stood out, I'm sure you can see why.

So go blog your song and link me in the comment section!
